Neuroathletics is one of the buzzwords currently drifting through youth football, or soccer as it's known in North America: eye drills, balance training, reaction lights. Behind it sits a simple idea. Your muscles don't steer your movement, your brain does, and it works only as well as the senses feed it information. A player who sees worse where the opponent stands, or stands unsteadily on one leg, loses duels that no fitness run can save. This article explains what neuroathletics really is, which three sensory systems sit behind it and what of that is proven and what is marketing. ## Why some mistakes aren't about fitness

After the 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France, the pundit Bastian Schweinsteiger said something that sounds harmless: "In football you can't always just watch the ball, you also have to watch your opponent. Sadly a lot of players get that wrong." He was talking about a World Cup final, about the best players in the world. And still he spotted a deficit here. That shows how much harder smooth perception on the pitch is than it sounds.

In amateur and youth football you know the same scene. A player gets the ball, turns into the opponent instead of into the free space and loses it. The usual reflex from the touchline is: "Concentrate!" Often, though, it wasn't a matter of will but of perception. The player hadn't looked before the touch and simply didn't know where the space was.

This is exactly where neuroathletics comes in. It treats the senses that supply the brain with this information as a trainable part of performance. Not as a replacement for technique and athleticism, but as their foundation. Because running faster helps little if the player sets off in the wrong direction.

## What neuroathletics is (and what it isn't)

Neuroathletics, also called neurocentred training, is a training approach that puts the nervous system at the centre. Through the senses, the brain constantly takes in information, processes it and steers every movement from it. Train this intake and processing deliberately, so the basic assumption goes, and the athlete moves more precisely, faster and more surely. The sequence is always the same: take in a stimulus, process it in the brain, carry out the movement.

The term became known in Germany above all through Lars Lienhard, who works with elite athletes and has written several books on it. Neuroathletics is often confused with Life Kinetik by Horst Lutz. Both work with perception and unfamiliar tasks, but with a different focus: Life Kinetik aims to challenge general brain performance through new, often playfully packaged movement and thinking tasks. Neuroathletics targets individual sensory systems and their measurable function more narrowly. The line to classic coordination training is blurred too, and many good coordination drills have long been neuroathletic without going by that name.

What matters is what neuroathletics is not. It replaces neither technique nor strength nor endurance. It is an additional building block that shifts a lot for one player and barely anything for another. Anyone selling it as a cure-all is overreaching.

## The three sensory systems: eyes, balance, body sense

Neuroathletics sounds complex, but it rests on three inputs through which the brain learns what is happening around the body and inside it. If one of them delivers poor data, the brain has to compensate, and the movement becomes less accurate or slower.

### The visual system (the eyes)

The eyes are the most important source of information in football. Through them the player picks up the ball, teammates and opponents, spaces and distances. What counts here is not visual acuity as at the optician, but the interplay of many functions. These include the fast shift of gaze between ball and surroundings, peripheral vision at the edge of the field of view and sharp switching between near and far. The shoulder check before receiving the ball is the most practical application of this.

### The vestibular system (balance)

The balance organ sits in the inner ear. It reports to the brain how the head is positioned in space and how it is moving. In football it decides the stable stance in a duel, the balance in a header and the controlled landing after a jump. A player with good balance holds the ball under pressure where another is already toppling over. Balance never works on its own here: the eyes support it strongly too, which is why people without eyesight score measurably worse on balance tests.

### Proprioception (body sense)

Proprioception is the perception of your own body: where are my feet, how far is a joint currently bent, how much pressure is on the standing leg? These senses in muscles, tendons and joints steer receiving the ball, shooting technique and sure footing on uneven ground. They are also the fastest protection against rolling an ankle, because they report a wrong joint position before the eye sees it.

## What neuroathletics can improve in football

Every action on the pitch runs through the same chain: perceive, decide, act. The idea of neuroathletics is that most coaches only practise the last stage, the action, and neglect the first. Whoever perceives earlier and more precisely wins time for the decision. A player who has already looked twice before the touch knows where to go by the moment of contact. Modern play leaves barely any time for this; ball contact times have dropped noticeably over recent decades.

The second angle is injury prevention. If a joint moves in a pattern the brain classifies as unsafe, it slows the movement down or builds in evasive patterns. Such compensation patterns cost performance and, over time, raise the injury risk. Better trained balance and body sense give the brain clean data and with it the confidence to allow the movement fully. You just mustn't overstretch it. Neuroathletics turns no slow player into a fast one and no technically weak player into a sure one. It can make existing performance easier to call up by sharpening the perception behind it.

## What's proven and what's marketing

On hardly any training topic do the marketing and the evidence gape apart as widely as here. So a sober look pays off.

On the credit side there are real findings. A study of around 80 youth players aged 15 to 17 found links between cognitive test scores and playing level. An older study showed a link between spatial vision and passing accuracy. That perception and football performance are connected is therefore well established, and that the eyes play a big part in it, likewise.

> **Warning:** Correlation is not causation. That good players see better does not yet mean
>   eye drills make weak players better. For this decisive transfer, from the
>   isolated drill to better match performance, the evidence is thin. Controlled
>   long-term studies in football are largely missing.

On top of that come two honest caveats. First, the placebo effect: anyone who believes in a method and devotes time to it often gets better through that alone. Second, the large role of the individual. Every athlete responds differently to the same stimulus. Neuroathletics experts admit this themselves, and it is exactly what makes the effect hard to compare in a classic study. That is a fair point, but it also makes the effect harder to prove.

For the club coach this means: neuroathletics is a plausible, cheap building block that breaks nothing and noticeably helps individual players. It is no miracle cure, and anything sold with pro proof photos and reaction-light packages as a performance guarantee deserves scepticism.

## Test, drill, re-test: make the effect checkable

The most honest and practical building block of neuroathletics is its measuring principle. Instead of trusting a drill, you check its effect directly, and for each player individually. The process has three steps:

1. **Test.** Measure a simple value, for example the seconds a player stands calmly on one leg with eyes closed. Or the number of clean wall passes with a shoulder check in 30 seconds. Note the figure down.
2. **Drill.** Carry out a short, targeted drill, say a minute of gaze shifts or balance work for the same system.
3. **Re-test.** Measure the same value again. If it's better, the drill was a good stimulus for that player. If it stays the same or gets worse, you drop it.

This approach turns a matter of belief into an observation. It stops you forcing the same drill on everyone, and it shows players in black and white that something is changing. Even this visible progress motivates. You need no technology for it, just a stopwatch and notes.

## Drills for each pillar: three tasters for training

The following three drills need a ball at most and each cover one sensory system. They are meant as a taster, not as a complete programme.

**Eyes: passing game with a call.** Two players pass to each other about five metres apart. A third stands behind the receiver and, before each pass, shows a number with their fingers or holds up a coloured bib. The receiver has to call the number or colour out loud before taking the ball. This trains the fast shift of gaze between ball and surroundings under time pressure. Progression: the whole thing on the move.

**Balance: one-leg stand with head movements.** The player stands on one leg and slowly turns the head left and right, then up and down, without losing balance. Anyone who stands steadily closes their eyes or catches and throws a ball on the side. This challenges the balance organ, which has to work without the eyes as a prop. 30 seconds per leg is enough. **Body sense: one-leg stand with disruptions.** The player stands on one leg while a partner gives light, unannounced nudges to the shoulder or hip. The task is to hold the position and, after each disruption, immediately come back to a calm stand. This trains the lightning-fast corrections from muscles and joints that also protect against rolling an ankle. Barefoot or on a soft surface it gets more demanding.

## From what age neuroathletics makes sense

A common mistake is to use neuroathletics as early and as isolated as possible. With the youngest, that is unnecessary. At U11 and below a child automatically gathers a huge range of sensory stimuli through catching games, climbing, balancing and free ball play. A separate eye-drill programme does not replace this variety; it rather narrows it. Anyone wanting to do something for perception here lets the children play in a varied way.

Neuroathletics becomes deliberately trainable from around U12, when children can steer a gaze or balance task on purpose and build the shoulder check into a habit. Up to U18 the emphasis then shifts from pure execution towards perception under pace and pressure, that is, in the middle of game forms rather than on a freeze frame. The overview below places this:

## How to build neuroathletics into club training

You need no dedicated training camp and no expensive equipment. The simplest route is to slot one of the three drills into the warm-up, twice a week for around ten minutes. Rotate the sensory system over the weeks, so that eyes, balance and body sense all get their turn. Keep the stimuli short and clean; tired perception achieves nothing.

Stay honest about your expectations. Some players will become noticeably surer in duels and more alert in build-up play, with others you'll see barely anything.
