Picture a youth football team, or soccer as it is known in North America, that trains speed three times a week for eight weeks. Maximal efforts, properly coached, up to 360 sprints in total. Then the players get tested. Before the block they ran 6.97 metres per second. Afterwards, 6.92. They came out fractionally slower than they went in.

That finding comes from Horst Allmann, for many years a lecturer with the German Football Coaches Association, and it is no outlier. It describes a problem almost every youth coach knows and hardly anyone says out loud: you sprint and sprint, and the team does not get faster. This guide shows you why that happens and what actually works. It also shows you when it works, and how to tell whether your training has changed anything at all.

## Why 500 sprints a week do nothing

Do the arithmetic. Across four sessions a week, a footballer covers 500 to 600 efforts over 5 to 25 metres. A track sprinter manages 120 to 150 maximal sprints in the same period. So the footballer sprints four times as often. By rights he should be the quicker one.

He is not. And from that follows an uncomfortable insight. For any training to change something, the body needs a stimulus: a load that is new enough or hard enough to force an adaptation. If 500 efforts a week no longer deliver that stimulus, ten more in the warm-up certainly will not. The body has known this pattern for a long time. It has adapted to it and files the existing pace away as a template. That is exactly why the same sprint, over and over, cements the current speed ceiling instead of shifting it.

The numbers back this up. Youngsters who got one extra sprint session a week improved their time by 1.5 percent. With two sessions a week it was 0.9 percent, so less. And the control group, which got no extra training at all? Also improved by 1.5 percent.

## The benchmark: 3 percent comes for free

Here is the thinking error that catches most coaches, and it is a treacherous one because it feels so good. You measure in August, you measure in May, the times are better. The training worked.

Maybe it did. Maybe it did not. Because a player at U14 age gets 2.4 to 3.1 percent faster per year without a single targeted session, and another good percent at U15. That was measured on more than a thousand academy players. The legs get longer, the muscles stronger, the nervous system more mature. All of it happens while your squad is playing video games.

So now you have a benchmark. If your U14s improve by two percent across a season, your training did not work. It even slowed the natural growth curve down a little. Your contribution only begins somewhere beyond three percent.

## What actually makes players faster

If sprinting does not make you faster, what does? The answer is unspectacular, and that is precisely why it is unpopular.

**Strength.** Over the first few metres the foot stays on the ground comparatively long. What decides the outcome is therefore how much force you press into the ground in that time, not how fast you move your legs. Track and field delivers the most striking example: shot putters and weightlifters who never do a single sprint session beat class sprinters over 30 metres. **Technique.** Strength is worthless if it leaks away in a sloppy stride. The foot has to land under the body, the hip has to extend, the trunk has to stay upright. That is the job of [running drills](https://areacopa.com/en/en/blog/soccer-running-drills), and it is the prerequisite, not the garnish.

**Stability.** A body that tips sideways on every ground contact loses force in every direction except forwards. Eight weeks of [balance training](https://areacopa.com/en/en/blog/balance-training-football-program) measurably improved the 20-metre time of 789 children aged 10 to 12. Without one extra sprint.

The sprints themselves still stay in the session. They are just not the training tool. They are the check on whether the work on strength and technique is landing.

And a fourth lever is not in the legs at all. The fastest player on the pitch is rarely the one with the best 30-metre time. It is the one who knows half a second earlier where to go. ## Maturity beats the calendar: the growth spurt

Picture your U14 age group. All born in the same calendar year, all in the same session. And two of them can still be **four years apart** physically. One is still living in a child's body, the other has the growth spurt behind him and shaves.

The decisive moment is the growth spurt, known in the literature as peak height velocity. In boys it sits between 13.8 and 14.2 years on average, but only on average. And around that point something happens that every coach recognises and misreads: the coordination collapses. Movements that used to be clean suddenly look wooden. The boy trips over his own legs.

That is not laziness and it is not a step backwards. Arms and legs grow faster than the nervous system can recalibrate the new levers. The technical name for it is apt: adolescent awkwardness. It passes. What matters in this phase is **holding** technique, not rebuilding it.

> **Tip:** A rough marker that needs no measuring kit: a player who has grown out of two
>   trouser sizes in the last six months and suddenly looks clumsy is in the middle
>   of the spurt. That player needs technique and patience right now, not a heavier
>   load.

## What works at which age

Now it gets practical. Maturity status decides not just how a player feels, but whether a training stimulus lands at all.

The resisted sprint is the clearest case. In youngsters past the growth spurt it delivers around 5.8 percent over 30 metres. In the players before it: nothing measurable. Same drill, same coaching, same effort, a result close to zero.

From that follows a rule of thumb that changes your session immediately. **Late developers get technique.** They have the better leverage for clean movement anyway, and strength stimuli fizzle out on them. **Early developers get strength.** The stimulus bites, and they often carry a technique deficit, because their size has papered over every flaw for years.

## How often, how long, how hard?

The most common mistake in speed training is not too little effort. It is too much. Three rules clear that up.

**One: not always maximal.** Run the sprints in training deliberately below top speed, at around 80 percent. The reason is simple. At full tilt the technique falls apart, and what falls apart gets grooved. You are practising the bad pattern.

**Two: long rests, short blocks.** A sensible sprint block for youngsters is three to four sets of four to five sprints over 15 to 50 metres. Between reps, two to three minutes. Between sets, four to five. It feels like a lot of standing around. It is still right, because speed needs a fresh nervous system.

**Three: take the stop signal seriously.** Once the times drop off, the block is over. From there on you are training endurance, not speed, and that was not the plan.

> **Info:** The same goes for coordination. It belongs at the start of the session, never at
>   the end. A tired player can no longer steer a fine movement, he only copies its
>   rough shape. Running drills during the cool-down are wasted time.

And a fourth rule, which sounds less like dosage and is still the most important: **vary.** The same sprint over the same distance from the same starting position only confirms what the body can already do. Change the distance, the surface, the start position, the resistance and the pace. The stimulus lives in the deviation.

## Three drills for the first five metres

So that none of this stays theory, here are three formats you can put on the pitch on Tuesday.

**Box jumps with self-chosen spacing.** Five low boxes in a row, players hop from box to box on one leg. The trick: the players set the gaps themselves. Around a metre to warm up, up to five in the target drill, raised in one-metre steps. This trains horizontal take-off force, which is exactly the force the first step needs.

**Resisted run with a light load.** A partner holds a rope or a harness with low resistance, the player runs 15 to 20 metres against it. The dosage is what matters: the resistance has to stay low enough that it still looks like sprinting. If it is too high, the player sinks into a seated posture and stamps forward at walking pace. Always follow with two or three free runs so the movement finds its way back to normal speed. Remember: this is a strength drill, not a cadence drill.

**High knees downhill.** A slight slope is enough. Anyone who wants to run clean high knees downhill has to be quick enough, or they fall over. The drill forces the movement instead of merely explaining it. Downhill only means this: a gentle slope, a short distance, and not with players who are currently stumbling through their growth spurt.

## Measure, don't guess: the 10-metre test

If you take one thing away from this text, take this: measure. Without numbers you do not know whether your training works, and you can only apply the three-percent growth benchmark if you have values in the first place.

Here is the clean way. Twenty metres, with a split at 10 metres. Start from a staggered stance, with no start signal, so reaction time does not get timed too. Three attempts, at least three minutes of rest between them. Score the average of the best two. For orientation: youth soccer players at U14 and U15 typically run 20 metres in 3.42 to 3.68 seconds.

And now the catch that hardly anyone mentions. Of all things, the first ten metres, the part that matters most in a match, are the hardest to measure. Repeatability there is mediocre, while the second ten metres are almost perfectly reproducible. For you that means: always measure both sections, and measure the first step more than once before you draw a conclusion from it.

> **Tip:** There is one test that works without a clock at all. Let the players set the box
>   gaps themselves. Players with weak acceleration put the boxes close together,
>   players with a powerful first step spread them wide. The squad sorts itself, and
>   in two minutes you can see who has to work on strength.

## Your plan for the season

Put the whole thing together into a simple sequence. At the start of the season you measure once, properly, 10 and 20 metres, and you write the values down. Then you look at the age group and sort it roughly: who is in the middle of the growth spurt, who has it behind them, who still has it ahead. After that you aim the focus. The players before the spurt get technique and coordination, the ones past it get strength and resisted formats. Twice a week a short, fresh block at 80 percent, with long rests and changing formats.

At the end of the season you measure again. And then you hold the three-percent bar against the result. If the improvement sits below it, that was growth. If it sits above, you moved something. It is an uncomfortable calculation, but it is honest, and it is more than 99 percent of clubs know about their own training.
